Welcome to the official PMRD newsletter for the month of January, 2011.

Portland Men's Roller Derby is dedicated to promoting the sport of men's roller derby in Portland, Oregon.  We are composed of men from a wide variety of backgrounds including coaches, referees, amateur skaters, relocated skaters and men that just want to learn to skate and play roller derby. Our sport and style of play mirrors current WFTDA standards including rules, game play, conduct and skill.

• Oaks Park hangar is located at 7805 Southeast Oaks Park Way, Portland, OR.  Look for the big green building directly across the parking lot from the Oaks Park skating rink.

PMRD occasionally has additional skate sessions during the week, and members of our team regularly attend open skates at Oaks Park rink.  Please refer to our website, Facebook page or twitter feed for weekly notifications.

INTRO TO ROLLER DERBY CLASS

Oaks Park rink holds an “Intro To Roller Derby” class every Saturday from 5:00pm - 6:00pm for only $7!  

New skaters are encouraged to attend these classes, and gear is available for rental -- so you can “try before you buy.”  The classes are taught by current members of the Rose City Rollers and Oaks staff.

Our practices are open to visitors, so come on by and meet the team.

Here's what you need to get started:

1. GEAR  The following gear is required to participate in practices:  Quad roller skates, Helmet, Knee Pads, Elbow Pads, Wrist Guards, and Mouth Guard.  Safety protective gear is of utmost importance in this sport, and we encourage all new skaters to buy quality gear.  If you have any questions about safety gear, please feel free to ask one of our team members for recommendations.  Dues-paying members of Portland Men’s Roller Derby receive a special discount at the Oaks Park Skate Shop on skates and safety gear for roller derby.
2. INSURANCE  USARS insurance is required to skate with us.  Our team has a USARS charter, but individuals also need USARS insurance to skate (even if you have primary insurance coverage).  The charge is $45 yearly, paid in January of every year.  We’ve got all the forms you need to fill out, so just bring a check made out to USARS and a copy of your driver’s license the first time you participate and we’ll get you set up.  USARS is required to skate with us.
