Home Bout in Portland
Summer of Slam - 8/26/11
A Sporting Competition of Rollerskating Gentlemen
Portland Men’s Roller Derby is pleased to announce their first hometown bout. On Friday, August 26th, PMRD will square off against the visiting Lane County Concussion of Eugene, OR at The Hangar at Oaks Park (home of the Rose City Rollers).
These two teams previously met on LCC’s home turf in July of this year.. After an exciting back-and-forth game, Portland narrowly came out ahead with a two point victory in the final jam. Now The Concussion is looking to take back Oregon’s top seed in men’s roller derby by upsetting PMRD at home. In one of the closest match-ups in Pacific Northwest derby, this bout is anybody’s game and is sure to be an edge-of-your-seat experience!
What to Expect:
14 Portland skaters versus 14 Eugene skaters in what is fast becoming Oregon's next "Civil War" sporting match-up.
- Full length men’s roller derby bout (single header) on the Hangar flat track.
- Guest appearance by the Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers
Tickets are on sale now at

Oaks Park in Sellwood, OR (just a few minutes from downtown Portland).

On Our Way to MRDA!

Portland Men’s Roller Derby is in the qualifying stages to become a member of the
Men’s Roller Derby Association, an international organization developed to foster and sustain competitive men’s roller derby. The immediate goal is to meet their membership criteria through playing public bouts - both at home and away - in order to reach member league status. In the long run, MRDA member status will enable PMRD to access a larger pool of community resources as well as taking part in MRDA’s sanctioned bouts, rankings, and tournaments.
PMRD is committed not only to growing men’s roller Derby in Portland but also roller derby and roller sports of all type around the world.
We Want YOU - To Skate!

PMRD is always recruiting new members. Currently, we are forming local teams for more at-home play and to supplement our all-star travel team. By late 2011 or early 2012 we hope to kick off our first home season with local bouts taking place regularly, but we’ll need to keep growing our numbers to make that possible!
In addition to team bouting, roller skating is also an excellent athletic outlet for men of all ages. The sport lends itself well to all sizes and body types. Afraid you can’t make the cut? Don’t sweat it! Many PMRD members had little to no skating or athletic background when they started and our experienced coaches have helped bring them up to the rough and tumble of roller derby standards.
If you’re a guy over 21 and you’re interested in skating with us,
visit our website and check the schedule. Practices are open to potential members - come check it out!
Fundraiser for a Downed Skater
In all sports, injury isn’t a matter of “if” but “when” - and in hobby sports, the medical coverage is... nil. For long-time PMRD member Silent Mob, the chance of injury finally caught up with him in early July just prior to the start of our bout against LCC in Eugene. Now Mob needs our help to get him back on skates - even after those bones heal and the metal is removed, he’ll have some pretty hefty medical bills to overcome.
If you’d like to help this skater recover, there are a couple ways you can pitch in:

All cash from both efforts go direct to Silent Mob’s recovery and rehabilitation.
PMRD is Homeless - Can We Rent Your Space?
Our rag-tag band of rogues and vagabonds is looking for a space we can call home - or at least one we can call “practice space.” PMRD practices three or more times each week during “off hours” like weekday evenings and weekend daytime. We need a space that’s flat, dry, and accessible to our members (in the Portland area). A standard derby track requires about 8,100 square feet that can be scuffed and marked with non-permanent markings (but we promise to clean up when we’re done!).
PMRD maintains skater and venue insurance to protect our members and practice facility.
Do you operate or know of a facility that may meet our needs? We’d love to hear from you!

Looking Ahead - Upcoming Bouts & Events
September 3rd-4th PMRD is hoping to take part in the Spudtown Knockdown Tournament in Boise, ID where we’ll play against Boise’s Capital City Skullcrushers, Uinta Madness, and Lane County Concussion. Want to help us get there? Attend Summer of Slam and make a contribution!
- Fall 2011 bouts, 2012 Home Season - We’re still working on our schedule for the rest of this year but we hope to have a Portland Home Season all hammered out soon! Stick with us via this newsletter and our Facebook page for updates & info.
